Miscellaneous Task #1: Article -“Women in Medieval Society”

S T R A V A G A N Z A: FEUDALISM AND WOMEN IN THE MIDDLE AGES
Women in Medieval Society

In the Middle Ages, women had various responsibilities, since at that time they did not have the right to work. That is why their responsibilities were the following: domestic responsibilities, infant care, food preparation at home and the care of cattle among others. It is important to mention that women have a common symbol as the representation of the peasant woman. This symbol is known as the spinning wheel. The spinning wheel was a tool used to spin threads and wool. In addition, the spinning wheel was a representation of Eve, since it means doing manual work after the fall from paradise.

On the other hand, the differences between women who lived in cities and women who lived in the countryside should be mentioned. Although both helped their husbands, the women of the city did so in crafts, jobs, creations of leather pieces, among others.

Also, it is interesting to know that during the Middle Ages there was a belief behind the story of giving a female head to the serpent that tempts Eve. This belief arose from the fact that history begins with the belief that women at that time were inferior to men and tempted them themselves.

However, despite the fact that women were for a time convinced that they were inferior to men, this did not change until women exercised their power as people. Many women at that time challenged the image of themselves as oppressed medieval women. In the church women held the positions with greater responsibilities. Outside the Church, women could hold some kind of political power by being queens, being royal names. A vivid example to demonstrate this is the case of Queen Elizabeth, who was the one who had the end of her husband’s reign between the years 1284-1327.

Despite the fact that many women managed to obtain power, not everything was perfect. The young women of the aristocrats had no power in their words and unfortunately were joined by their relatives with “strange” couples. Although this was the case for women, it was also for men, but rarely. Women who went through this situation became women when they married. At that time, they wanted not to have children, due to the fact that they felt free because they did not have such a great responsibility and although the reality for rich women was not so difficult, because they could hire a maid and they had more time to spend. they. However, aristocratic women had activities that entertained them, which were religion, hunting, dances and games.

Last but not least, pregnancy in middle age. When a woman had children and became pregnant, she had to know that by middle age this could be risky in general senses. These risks are the following: breech presentations of a baby, cesarean section since ancient times that could only be performed if the mother was dead or dying, among others.

Finally, I must admit that I learned too many things by reading this article. It is interesting to know how women lived back then. Also, I must accept that what caught my attention the most was how aristocratic women lived and what pregnancy was like back then. I would really recommend this article, specifically to women so that they can be nourished with information and know how this war of “equality” has been going on for centuries.

2. The Middle Ages Explained in 10 minutes: (Summary)

The video entitled “The Middle Ages explained in 10 minutes”, talks about wars, crusades, religions, The Battle of Hastings in 1066, Magna’s Carta among others. First of all, he talks about how Christianity began during the New Rome and how he himself influenced it in every way. He began to look everywhere. In addition, it mentions how the religions of that time, such as the Muslims, destroyed those different types of religions that existed. Apart from this, it is important to mention how the crusades greatly influenced what has become Christianity and the Middle Ages. That war appeared for too many years until they could conquer their “land”. On the other hand, the battle of Hastings in 1066 was one of the most significant moments of The Middle Ages. It was based on the Norman conquest of England, as many kings were less interested in ruling. Last but not least, the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta was one of the most important documents in Europe. In this he will mention and assure that the King will protect the holdings of land barons in England. By then, France was encroaching on them too much and the King’s duty was to guarantee his estates and the political influence of the monarchy.
